These are some of the things that Floridians think are normal, but for outsiders it seems really strange, to wear flip flops all year round. Wear Ugg boots and shorts as part of the same outfit. Learn to flee from alligators. A Florida Native's Introvert's Guide to the Sunshine State The Florida Everglades are an ecosystem found nowhere else in the world.
At 3 million acres, the Everglades covers much of South Florida, except for a couple of fragments of civilization on both coasts. Nicknamed the “grass river,” the Everglades is a watershed and natural filtration system, a land of slowly flowing water, swamp reeds, thick mud (several feet in places), and occasionally a hardwood hammock. Ecologically, the Everglades are home to thousands of species of plants and animals, many of which are not found anywhere else in the world and some are in danger of extinction. Its limestone plant, mud and substrate filtration system helps to clean rainwater before accumulating it in our aquifers.
It also cleans runoff from farms and towns further north before water flows into Florida Bay. Much of Florida's algal bloom problems stem from human manipulation of the Everglades using canals and collection ponds. By doing so at the beginning of the 20th century, farmers could plant their crops in the rich land that remained drying up parts of the swamp. The developers also benefited and built hundreds of neighborhoods for Northerners who wanted to live in paradise.
The Everglades also serve a great recreational purpose. Anglers tackle bass fishing in the canals found all over the Glades. Families camp in parks such as Everglades Holiday Park. Boaters can run their boat through the reeds without much trouble.
